Holding The Drumsticks

Learn How To Hold Drumsticks With Proper Grip

One of the most essential things every drummer must learn is how to hold drumsticks correctly. This is essential because it is such a big part of everyday drumming. Incorrect grip can lead to pain, muscle tension, and a limitation on speed and power when playing the drums. Correct grip reduces tension, and gives you the opportunity to play with more speed, power, control, and endurance.
The free video drum lesson on this page is actually a DVD excerpt from Mike Michalkow's "Moeller Method Secrets" training pack. With this 7-minute video clip, you will learn how to hold the drumsticks in both matched grip, and traditional grip. Mike gives step-by-step instruction on how to find the balance point (aka fulcrum point) of the drumstick, and then how to apply it with both grips. He also explains the pros and cons to both methods, so you can decide which works best for you.
Whether you are brand new to playing the drums, or you've been playing for a few years, it's never a bad idea to learn correct techniques. All the top pro drummers agree - proper drumstick grip is essential!
